The Rimrock Resort Hotel

The Rimrock is cut into the slope of Sulphur Mountain above the town of Banff, next to the Upper Hot Springs. Because it sits on the mountain rather than in the valley, the main rooms look straight down the Bow Valley through a wall of glass. It is a large hotel run at a high standard, with a dining room that has held a serious reputation for years. In February the valley holds its snow and the midweek lift lines are short.

Light is a nine because the building faces down the valley and takes the whole afternoon. Sleep is an eight: it is a big hotel, and the corridors carry more sound than a small one.

Post Hotel & Spa

The Post sits on the Pipestone River in Lake Louise village, a short drive below the lake itself. It is a log building run by the same family for decades, and it operates far more like a European mountain hotel than a resort. The wine cellar is among the largest and most serious in the country and is the subject of most of what is written about the place. Rooms vary widely in size and layout, which is a feature of the building rather than a fault.

Food is a ten, and the cellar underneath it is a genuine collection rather than a list. Effort is a seven: two hours from Calgary, on a highway that closes in bad weather.

Nita Lake Lodge

Nita Lake Lodge stands on the shore of Nita Lake at Creekside, away from the village and its noise. It has its own railway platform, and the restored heritage rail cars parked there are part of the property. Creekside gondola is a few minutes on foot, which makes this the easiest first-chair arrangement in the section. Rooms face either the lake or the mountain, and the lake side is the one to ask for.

Setting is a nine because the lake is private to the building and stays quiet in every season. Food is an eight: solid and well run, without the ambition of the Alberta houses in this section.
